Detective Chief Inspector Steve May has over 25 years service in Merseyside Police. The majority of this time has been spent within the Criminal Investigation Department in Liverpool. He is an experienced Area Detective and a fully trained senior investigating officer (SIO). Steve took up his current role in 2004, when he took over the Force Middle Market Drug Unit. This Unit has been commended several times for its work in tackling level 2 drug trafficking. As part of this role, one of his responsibilities was preparing the ACPO portfolio in relation to police support for schools and colleges in drug issues. Steve is also a member of ACPO and ACPOS Drugs Committees.

In 2005, the Middle Market Drug Unit was incorporated into MATRIX, Merseyside Police’s response to drug trafficking, gun-crime, gang-related criminality and cash-in-transit robberies, and he is in overall charge of the covert and investigative wings of MATRIX as well as Drug Support.

His previous experience includes a lengthy secondment to the National Crime Squad where he led investigations into large-scale drug importation, exportation and robberies. He has also worked as Senior Investigating Officer in Liverpool North, where he was also responsible for the Force Robbery Reduction Team.
