| David joined Greater Manchester Police in 1985 . Rising to the rank of Detective Chief Inspector in 1997 he was responsible for running one of the most wide ranging test purchase operations mounted by the Force.
Going on to be Detective Superintendent based in Oldham he dealt with numerous murder enquiries across Manchester before taking over the Major Crime Review Unit. In 2002 he took over command of the Tameside Division, dealing with the aftermath of the Harold Shipman public inquiry. He also introduced Neighbourhood Policing Teams into the Borough.
David joined West Yorkshire Police in 2004 as Assistant Chief Constable with responsibility for Territorial Operations and Community Safety. During this time, David has been Gold Commander for the response to 7/7 and also in relation to the murder of PC Sharon Beshenivsky.
David is the ACPO Champion for the Drug Intervention Programme.
