| In January of this year, Jean-Luc Lemahieu was nominated Chief of the Section for Europe, West and Central Asia at the Department of Operations of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime. Prior to that he served five years as head of the UNODC office in Myanmar. Before his assignment in Myanmar, Jean-Luc Lemahieu undertook a short stint in Brussels to liaise with the European Commission and headed the Caribbean drug control Coordination Mechanism (CCM) from February 1997 to June 2000.
He has been working with the United Nations since 1990, first with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in the Republic of Korea, and later briefly with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) before finally joining UNODC in 1994.
Jean-Luc Lemahieu obtained a Licence Degree in Law Studies at the University of Leuven, a Postgraduate Degree in International Law and Integrated Export Management at the University of Brussels.
